Description
Part of our work in English consisted of reading a book of our choice, I decided that out of our four options I would read Hold Love Strong. Written by Matthew Goodman, the book takes place in the projects of New York in a small town named Ever Park. The author writes about a young boy named Abraham and his struggles of living in an area with a huge crack epidemic and a wave of HIV cases rising. All while fighting an inner struggle of trying to figure out who he wants to be. The book not only tells the story of Abraham but also the stories of Americans who are living in impoverished areas.

Literary Devices and Skills
Literary devices that are used to add energy to the writing and therefore catch the attention of the reader. While reading Hold Love Strong I found that the author decided to write from the point of view of Abraham. As the story is told, we follow each tragedy through what he sees and hears. Often it becomes very powerful because you get to know what Abraham's emotions are. While reading this book I found that it was quite important to pay attention to minor details because each chapter was a different stage in his life, and those minor details could be the cause of what was next. To finish this part of the project off, our last assignment was to write an essay using only our books as a resource. And to write it through one of our seven lenses. I choose to write through the critical race theory. Critical race was something that I easily found embedded in the book. Because he lives in a poor area with drugs, all this is ties back into his race, making this theory obvious.
